Travel Tips

Whenever I have a trip planned whether it be for business or pleasure, there are a few points I like to observe to make my trip better. Regardless of how far away I'm going, be it across town or around the world, things will be different than they are at home. The degree of difference will vary, but there will be differences nonetheless. Apply these points and you'll have a terrific trip and just might learn a thing or two.

1. Don't compare any place you visit to yours. Home will always win. That's why it's your home. And that's why coming back home is the grand finale to any travel. However while you're away, making constant comparisons to where you come from will make your travel a lot less enjoyable.

2. Purposely seek out things that are different than where you live. It doesn't have to be some delicacy from a far off land. But to create a new experience, observing how others live is a big part of what makes vacationing fun. So to make the most of your trip, make an effort to leave your own 'ways' at home and join in the culture of the places you're visiting to really have a more memorable experience and appreciation of other cultures. Every city, town, village or even little settlement within a region, has its own distinctive characteristics. Explore to find what they are. Your findings may be quite memorable.

3. Never forget any place you're visiting is somebody else's home. Therefore, be respectful. This is commonly a issue in big tourist places. Every year people will arrive in town, throw down lots of money but make a mess of the place. And the locals start to look negatively upon the tourists because of the damage they cause. Remember the golden rule: treat others as you want to be treated, or in this case, treat their home as you want yours treated. Also spending some time to brush up on the local culture will make you aware of what is acceptable and what's not.

4. Go beyond 'main' street or regular tourist attractions. Even if it's just for a bit, look at where the locals eat, or shop. It can be hard in the big tourist centers but if you ask around many locals will happily share information about their city.

5. Be engaged. Do it all the more if the culture is completely different from home. Step out and talk with people and inquire about a particular event, food, or drink. It's through this interaction that you will learn the history of the land or their ways, which can be very interesting. Recognize that once in a while you may have to hear how much better their ways are than yours. Just be kind, as these will be the exception to the rule.
